Is GPTZero Accurate? We Tested It and Read the Reviews

You wrote the essay yourself. You paste it into GPTZero just to be safe, and the score says it looks like AI. Or maybe the score was low yesterday and high today, and your deadline is close. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone, and the first thing to know is that one score does not prove anything.

So, is GPTZero accurate? On long, plain AI text it is one of the stronger detectors, but it is not perfect, and students run into three real problems. First, short, edited or mixed writing gives shakier results, and GPTZero itself warns about texts under 100 words. Second, formal or non native English writing is more likely to be wrongly flagged, which research has shown across many detectors. Third, a score is a signal, not proof, and the reviews of GPTZero mix complaints about false flags with complaints about billing and cancelling. This guide covers our own three tests, what Reddit and Trustpilot users report, and what to do if you are flagged. If you have already been marked as AI by mistake, our explainer on ai detection false positives shows why it happens.

GPTZero at a Glance

What Is GPTZero?

GPTZero is an AI writing detector. According to an academic paper that describes the tool, it was created by Princeton student Edward Tian and launched in January 2023. GPTZero now says on its pricing page that it is trusted by over 10 million teachers and students and is an official AI detector partner of the American Federation of Teachers. Besides the AI detector, it offers a plagiarism check, a writing replay feature, a hallucination detector and a grammar checker.

How GPTZero Says Its Detection Works

GPTZero explains on its how it works page that its model turns text into a list of numbers that acts like a fingerprint of the writing style. Human and AI writing form two overlapping groups, and a dividing line decides which side your text lands on. GPTZero admits that some human writing looks like AI output, and that this overlap is what makes detection hard. It also says it tries to avoid false positives first, because wrongly flagging a student is worse than missing some AI text. If you want to know what the percentages mean, our guide to ai detection score meaning breaks it down.

How Accurate Is GPTZero?

What GPTZero and Benchmarks Claim

GPTZero says its detector reaches about 99% accuracy. A 2026 research paper that lists vendor claims reports that GPTZero’s own paper cites 99.39% accuracy and that its public benchmark post claims a false positive rate of 0.08%, and the paper labels these as vendor figures, not independent results. Review sites also cite a University of Chicago Booth benchmark where GPTZero scored about 99.5% with a very low false positive rate. Reports of that benchmark differ slightly, from 99.3% to 99.5%, so treat the exact numbers with care.

What Independent and Real World Tests Found

Results drop when the tests get harder. A 12 tool comparison by Scribbr, as reported by a review site, put GPTZero at 52% overall accuracy. A March 2025 academic study found that GPTZero’s detection fell to 52% on AI text that had been paraphrased with a humanize mode, even though it did well on unedited AI text. Another review reports real world testing on 2,400 mixed samples with about 87% accuracy and a 10% false positive rate.

These tests used different texts and methods, which is why the numbers range from about 50% to nearly 100%. The simple lesson is that GPTZero does best on long, plain, unedited text and worse on edited or mixed writing.

The Formal and Non Native Writing Problem

The biggest risk for students is a false flag. A Stanford study published in the journal Patterns tested seven GPT detectors and found that an average of 61.3% of essays by non native English writers were wrongly labelled as AI, while essays by US eighth graders were almost always classified correctly. The study did not single out GPTZero, it dates from 2023, and newer detector versions may do better. Even so, it explains why careful, formal or simple word choices can trigger a flag. If English is your second language, keep your drafts as proof of your work.

Our GPTZero Tests: What We Found

We ran three small tests with GPTZero’s Advanced Scan: one fully human written text, one fully AI written text, and one human written text polished with AI. GPTZero labelled all three correctly, and each result is shown below. All three texts were under 100 words, which GPTZero itself says can make results less accurate.

Test 1: Fully Human Written Text Result

GPTZero Advanced Scan result for human written text showing Human 100 percent and a warning that the text is under 100 words

This screenshot shows GPTZero’s Advanced Scan on a short, fully human written paragraph about how people spent time together in 1998. GPTZero says it is highly confident the text is entirely human, with Human 100%, AI 0% and Mixed 0%. A yellow notice above the result warns that the text is under 100 words and that the result may be less accurate. The result is correct, but it comes from a very short sample.

Test 2: Fully AI Written Text Result

GPTZero Advanced Scan result for fully AI written text showing AI 100 percent and a warning that the text is under 100 words

This screenshot shows the same scan on a short paragraph that was written fully by AI, about how small decisions can change our lives. GPTZero says it is highly confident the text was AI generated, with AI 100%, Mixed 0% and Human 0%. The same warning about texts under 100 words appears, and a Model 4o label shows which detection model ran. The result is correct.

Test 3: Human Written Text Polished With AI Result

GPTZero result for human written text polished with AI showing an AI Polished label and Mixed 99 percent

This screenshot shows a paragraph that started as human writing and was then polished with AI. GPTZero labels it AI Polished and says it is highly confident the text was human written and polished with AI. The breakdown reads Mixed 99%, AI 1% and Human 0%, and GPTZero marks this label as a beta feature. This is the most useful result for students, because it shows the tool trying to tell light AI editing apart from fully AI writing, but it is still a very short sample.

What Our Tests Do and Do Not Prove

Three short samples cannot prove that GPTZero is accurate. They show that it can recognize plain AI text and plain human text in simple cases, and the AI Polished label is a useful step for students who only used AI to edit. They do not show how it handles a 1,500 word essay, formal writing, non native English or text run through a humanizer. We run bigger comparisons in the post where we tested every AI plagiarism checker.

What Reddit Students Say About GPTZero

The four Reddit posts below come from the r/ApplyingToCollege community. They are opinions from individual students, not tests, but they repeat the same themes: false positives, scores that change and confusion between two similar tools.

Reddit Review 1: A Student Says False Positives Have Increased

Reddit comment in r/ApplyingToCollege saying GPTZero false positives have increased and flags neatly written work

This Reddit screenshot, from the r/ApplyingToCollege community, shows a student saying GPTZero used to feel reliable but now flags too much. They say they have used it for over a year, that neatly written work gets flagged, and that their own writing was marked as AI. They also say other services seem more accurate at a lower price. This is one person’s opinion, not a test, but it matches other complaints about false positives.

Reddit Review 2: Scores That Changed After Submitting and Translating

Reddit comments about GPTZero scores changing from low to 90 percent AI after submission and after translation

This screenshot shows two Reddit comments. One student says their essays scored very low for AI before submitting, then showed about 90% AI when checked again three days later, with nothing changed. Another says a thesis scored 100% AI, dropped to about 30% after being translated to English, and reached about 50/50 only when the text was simplified until it was barely readable. These are personal reports, but they show why a single score should never be treated as final.

Reddit Review 3: The GPTZero and ZeroGPT Mix-Up

Reddit thread where students debate GPTZero and ZeroGPT accuracy and point out the two tools are different

This screenshot shows a thread where a commenter points out that GPTZero and ZeroGPT are different tools that people often mix up. They say GPTZero seems accurate while ZeroGPT flags too much human writing as AI. A reply disagrees, saying GPTZero is also inaccurate because other detectors can score a text over 50% AI while GPTZero calls it human. The thread shows how easily the two names are confused and how opinions differ.

Reddit Review 4: A Formal Essay Flagged 100% AI Before a Deadline

Reddit post from a student whose self written formal essay was flagged 100 percent AI before a deadline

This screenshot shows a student saying they wrote an essay entirely themselves in a formal, academic tone and a detector rated it 100% AI. They were panicking because the deadline was close and their professor planned to run all essays through a detector. Another student replies that they are in the same situation. The visible part of the post does not name the detector, so treat it as an example of the stress a false flag can cause.

What These Reddit Posts Tell Us

Three patterns stand out. Students feel formal, neat writing gets flagged. They see scores move after submitting or after translating, which makes a single result feel unreliable. And many mix up GPTZero with ZeroGPT, so some complaints may be about a different tool. Forum posts are anecdotes, so use them as clues about student worries, not as proof of GPTZero’s error rate.

What Trustpilot Reviewers Say About GPTZero

On Trustpilot, GPTZero sits at 2.1 stars from 143 reviews. Trustpilot’s own summary of recent reviews says many reviewers found the detector inaccurate, including claims that academic writing and even published books were flagged as AI, and that some saw the subscription features as misleading. We saved 12 reviews to show both sides: five positive and seven negative.

Trustpilot Overview: GPTZero at 2.1 Stars From 143 Reviews

GPTZero Trustpilot profile showing a 2.1 star rating from 143 reviews

This screenshot shows GPTZero’s Trustpilot profile with a 2.1 star rating from 143 reviews. The profile is marked as claimed in November 2024, and the company is listed as a software company. A 2.1 score is low, and the reviews behind it mix complaints about false flags with complaints about billing, as explained below. Scores change over time.

Positive Trustpilot Review 1: Worked as Promised and Helpful Support

Five star Trustpilot review saying GPTZero worked as promised and support helped with cancelling

This five star review, from July 2026, says the software worked as promised and gave great suggestions for the reviewer’s writing. It also says the support team was really helpful when it came time to cancel. That detail matters, because cancelling is exactly where many negative reviews complain.

Positive Trustpilot Review 2: Two Short Reviews on Usefulness

Two five star Trustpilot reviews of GPTZero praising it as a useful work tool

This screenshot shows two five star reviews from 2025. One calls GPTZero a great work tool. The other says the experience was good because the tool told them what was AI and what was not. Both are short and describe usefulness rather than technical accuracy.

Positive Trustpilot Review 3: Free Plan Summary and Text Breakdown

Five star Trustpilot review calling GPTZero the best AI detector and praising the free plan summary

This March 2025 five star review calls GPTZero the best AI detector the reviewer has used. They say even the free plan gives a good summary and tells you if text seems AI generated, and that a paid plan adds a breakdown of the text, such as common words AI uses. They also recommend making an account because it saves your documents and shows stats.

Positive Trustpilot Review 4: Spotting AI and Constructive Feedback

Two five star Trustpilot reviews of GPTZero about spotting AI and getting constructive feedback

This screenshot shows two five star reviews from early 2025. One says the tool really helps them spot AI in other people’s work. The other enjoys the constructive feedback and says the grading tool is particularly helpful. They show that some users value GPTZero as a feedback tool, not only as a detector.

Positive Trustpilot Review 5: A Short Recommendation to Buy a Plan

Five star Trustpilot review recommending GPTZero and buying a plan to enjoy it fully

This March 2025 five star review is titled as an honest review. The reviewer says GPTZero has been amazing at everything and recommends downloading it and purchasing a plan to enjoy it fully. It is enthusiastic but short, and it gives few details to check.

Negative Trustpilot Review 1: Recurring Charge Without Agreement

One star Trustpilot review saying GPTZero charged for a yearly subscription the reviewer did not agree to

This one star review, from late September 2026, says the reviewer was charged for a recurring yearly subscription they say they never agreed to, and that it happened twice. They warn others to protect their card. It is one person’s experience, but it matches a pattern of billing complaints.

Negative Trustpilot Review 2: Cancelling Takes Many Screens

One star Trustpilot review describing many confirmation screens and no renewal notice when cancelling GPTZero

This one star review, from early October 2026, says there was no notice before the next charge. The reviewer says cancelling meant clicking through about ten are you sure screens on the GPTZero site and then more on the payment page. They say the service is not worth even the price of a monthly ChatGPT subscription.

Negative Trustpilot Review 3: Full Annual Fee Charged Upfront

One star Trustpilot review saying GPTZero charged a full annual fee at once without clear warning

This one star review, from late September 2026, says the checkout and pricing were misleading. The reviewer meant to use the tool for a couple of months but says a full annual fee was charged at once without a clear warning. They advise anyone planning short term use to be careful, which is why you should check monthly versus annual billing before paying.

Negative Trustpilot Review 4: Academic Writing Flagged as AI

One star Trustpilot review saying GPTZero flags academic writing and citations as AI

This one star review, from September 2026, is about accuracy instead of billing. The reviewer says the tool flags correctly written academic work, and citations, as AI. It is brief and gives no examples, but it echoes the Reddit posts about formal writing being flagged.

Negative Trustpilot Review 5: Plan Limit Used Up the Credits

One star Trustpilot review about GPTZero plan limits using up credits and repeated upgrade prompts

This one star review, from mid September 2026, says the reviewer paid for a subscription but kept being told to upgrade. They say they could only use 50,000 characters, and one text used up all their credits. They also describe an automated message about cancelling and call the experience a scam. This is one reviewer’s view, but plan limits are worth checking before you buy.

Negative Trustpilot Review 6: Charges Continued After Cancelling

One star Trustpilot review saying GPTZero charges continued after cancellation emails

This one star review, from August 2026, says the actual program works great but the reviewer could not cancel. They say they received several emails confirming the account was cancelled, yet charges continued, and they had to report their card stolen and dispute the charge. It shows that the tool and the billing can be rated separately.

Negative Trustpilot Review 7: A Difficult Cancellation and Cold Support

Two star Trustpilot review describing a difficult GPTZero cancellation and unhelpful customer service

This two star review, from April 2026, calls the cancellation process incredibly difficult to navigate and says the reviewer lost a significant amount of money. They describe the customer service reply as cold and unhelpful, with no apology. They also say the website showed incorrect information and poor feedback on their text.

What the Trustpilot Reviews Tell Us

The positive reviews praise the tool as useful, the free plan summary, and feedback features. Six of the seven negative reviews we saved are about billing and cancelling: yearly charges the reviewer did not expect, hard to find cancel steps, charges after cancelling and plan limits. One is about accuracy, and Trustpilot’s own summary suggests that accuracy complaints are common too. In short, GPTZero’s reviews mix two separate problems, how the detector scores your writing and how the company bills you. Judge them separately.

Real Student Problems With GPTZero and How to Fix Them

Here is a quick summary of the problems students describe, followed by a closer look at the ones that cause the most stress.

ProblemWhy it happensWhat to do
Your own writing is flaggedFormal, simple or predictable writing can look like AI to a detectorKeep drafts, notes and version history and ask your instructor to review them
The score changes laterDetectors are updated, and small edits or different tools change resultsScreenshot the result with the date and avoid editing after you submit
Short text looks wrongGPTZero warns that texts under 100 words may be less accurateTest full paragraphs or the full essay, not a few lines
Translated or edited text behaves oddlyChanging wording changes the patterns a detector readsKeep your original draft and note your editing steps
GPTZero and ZeroGPT get mixed upThey are two separate tools with similar namesFind out which tool your school uses before you compare scores
Unexpected chargesAnnual billing or renewals are easy to missCheck monthly versus annual before paying, set a reminder and keep cancellation emails

When Your Own Writing Gets Flagged

First, stay calm. A flag is a signal for your instructor to look closer, not proof that you cheated. Gather your outline, notes, drafts and version history, such as the history in Google Docs, which shows how an essay grew over time. GPTZero also offers a writing replay feature that records how a document is written. Then ask your instructor to look at your evidence. Our guide for students who feel falsely accused of using ai walks through the steps in more detail.

When the Score Changes After You Submit

Several Reddit users in our screenshots say a score changed later with no edits. Detectors are updated, and the same text can score differently across tools and versions. GPTZero’s result screen even labels the detection model it used, which shows models can change. Save a dated screenshot of any result you receive, avoid editing a submitted file, and remember that no single result is final.

When Short, Edited or Translated Text Gives Odd Results

Short texts give a detector less to study, and GPTZero warns about anything under 100 words. Translating or heavily rewording text can also change the score, as one Reddit user described. If you want a useful check, scan the full draft instead of a few lines, and compare more than one detector without treating any single number as the truth.

When Billing Goes Wrong

Most of the negative Trustpilot reviews we saved were about money, not detection. Before you pay, check whether the plan is monthly or annual, look at the plan limits and note the renewal date. Pay with a card you can control, keep the confirmation and cancellation emails, and cancel well before the renewal date. This is general advice, not legal advice.

GPTZero vs ZeroGPT, Turnitin and QuillBot

Students often compare GPTZero with other detectors. This table shows how they differ, based on the sources below it.

ToolWho runs itAccess for studentsMain thing to know
GPTZeroGPTZero (gptzero.me)Free plan with limits, paid plans for moreUses AI, Mixed and Human labels and offers a writing replay feature
ZeroGPTA separate company (zerogpt.com)Free tool, with ads according to reviewsNot the same company as GPTZero, and some independent tests report more false positives
TurnitinSchools and universitiesUsually only through your schoolYour school decides how to use its AI score, and it will not match GPTZero
QuillBot AI detectorQuillBotFree tool, check current limitsAnother popular free checker, and its scores can differ from GPTZero

GPTZero vs ZeroGPT: Not the Same Tool

Despite the similar names, GPTZero and ZeroGPT are different tools. GPTZero says on its own site that the two are not the same company and that GPTZero launched first. That is a claim from GPTZero, so we also looked at independent write ups. One test by Cybernews found GPTZero more accurate than ZeroGPT, and other reviews report higher false positive rates for ZeroGPT. Still, the Reddit thread above shows students disagree, so test your own drafts. Our full zerogpt review explains how ZeroGPT works.

The practical point is simple: if a classmate says a detector flagged their essay, ask which one it was before you compare scores.

GPTZero vs Turnitin and QuillBot

Turnitin is a school tool, so you usually cannot run it yourself, and its AI score will not match a GPTZero score. QuillBot also offers a free AI detector, and its scores can differ again. Different detectors use different methods, so a number from one tool cannot be compared directly with a number from another. If you want to see how GPTZero, Turnitin and our own detector compare, read our post on turnitin vs gptzero vs skyline academic.

Is GPTZero Free and Is It Worth Paying For?

GPTZero Free Plan and Pricing

GPTZero has a free plan. Most recent reviews list about 10,000 words a month, although older ones list lower limits, so check the limit when you sign up. Our screenshots show an account with 6K of 10K credits remaining, an Upgrade to Premium button and no advanced scans left. GPTZero’s pricing page offers annual billing with a 45% saving. Third party sources, such as this pricing guide and this review, list paid tiers from about $10 to about $46 a month on monthly billing, and the prices differ by source and date. Always confirm the price and billing period on GPTZero’s own checkout screen.

Is GPTZero Worth It for Students?

For checking your own drafts now and then, the free plan is usually enough, and it lets you see whether a passage reads as AI before you submit. Paying makes more sense only if you scan a lot of text and need the extra breakdown tools. Given the billing complaints, read the terms first. If the price or the billing worries you, our list of gptzero alternative options shows other tools to consider.

The Verdict: Is GPTZero Accurate?

GPTZero is one of the more accurate detectors on plain, longer AI text, and it says it tries to avoid false positives first. It is not perfect. It is less reliable on short, edited, translated or formal writing, and detectors in general have been shown to misjudge non native English writers. Our three short tests were all correct, but they are not proof.

Our advice: use GPTZero as one signal, scan full drafts, compare more than one tool, such as our ai content detector, and keep your drafts as proof of your work. Never treat a single score as the final word, whether it helps you or hurts you.

Frequently Asked Questions About GPTZero Accuracy

Is GPTZero accurate for student essays?

GPTZero does best on long, plain AI text and worse on short, edited or formal writing. Independent tests range from about 50% to nearly 100% depending on the text. Treat the score as one signal, not proof.

Is GPTZero free to use?

Yes. GPTZero has a free plan, and recent reviews list about 10,000 words a month. Paid plans add more words and extra tools, so check the limit and price at sign up.

Is GPTZero legit and safe to pay for?

GPTZero is an established company that says millions of people use it. The complaints on Trustpilot focus on false flags and on billing, so read the plan terms, check monthly versus annual, and set a cancellation reminder.

Is GPTZero or ZeroGPT better?

They are different tools from different companies. GPTZero says it is the original, and some independent tests found GPTZero more accurate, but results vary. Test your own draft and note which tool your school uses.

Is GPTZero as accurate as Turnitin?

They cannot be compared directly. Turnitin is run through schools and uses its own methods, so its AI score will not match a GPTZero score. Ask your instructor which tool they use.

Why does GPTZero say my writing is AI when I wrote it myself?

Formal, simple or very predictable writing can look like AI to a detector, and non native English writing is flagged more often in research. Keep drafts and version history as proof, and tell your instructor calmly.

Why did my GPTZero score change after I submitted my essay?

Detectors are updated, and the same text can score differently across versions and tools. Some Reddit users report big changes with no edits. Save a dated screenshot and avoid editing a submitted file.

Is GPTZero reliable for text under 100 words?

Not very. GPTZero shows a notice that texts under 100 words may give less accurate results. Scan the full paragraph or the whole essay for a more useful check.

How much is GPTZero and is it worth it?

Third party sources list paid plans from about $10 to $46 a month, and GPTZero offers a 45% saving on annual billing. For checking your own drafts, the free plan is often enough, so only pay if you need more volume.

Can I use GPTZero to prove I wrote my essay?

A GPTZero score cannot prove authorship. Better evidence is your outline, notes, drafts and version history. GPTZero also offers a writing replay feature that records how a document is written, so ask whether your school accepts it.

Final Thoughts

So, is GPTZero accurate? It is useful, and often right on plain, longer text, but it can be wrong on short, edited, translated or formal writing, and billing is a separate worry for many users. Use it as a signal, keep proof of how you wrote your work, and never panic over one number. If you ever need help understanding a result or improving your writing, Skyline Academic is here to support you every step of the way.
