Plagiarism is more than copying a paragraph word for word. Universities also treat each of these as serious problems.
Mixing copied phrases into your own sentences.
Rewording a source so closely that it still follows the original, without a citation.
Reusing your own earlier work without permission.
Copying that comes from a forgotten citation.
Our checker highlights both exact matches and paraphrased similarities, so you can spot each of these before you submit. For a full breakdown with examples, read our guide to the types of plagiarism.
Your report shows a similarity score and every matched passage with its source. A match is not automatically plagiarism: correctly quoted and cited text, common phrases and reference lists can all show up as matches.
As Smith (2021) notes, “climate policy works best when it is designed locally.” Cities that set their own targets tend to cut emissions faster than national programmes do, which suggests that local action deserves more funding.
On the other hand, national rules still matter for setting minimum standards.
Smith, J. (2021). Local climate policy.
Work through each highlighted passage
If it is a quote
Check it has quotation marks and a citation.
If it is a paraphrase that follows the source too closely
Rewrite it in your own words and cite the source.
If it is a common phrase or a reference
Common phrases and reference list entries can show up as matches. They are not plagiarism on their own.
Submitting through Turnitin? Our guide to the Turnitin similarity score explains how instructors read that report.
A plagiarism checker looks for text that matches existing sources. An AI detector estimates whether text was written by a tool such as ChatGPT.
| Compare | Plagiarism checker | VSAI detector |
|---|---|---|
| What it checks | Whether your text matches existing sources: web pages, academic journals and previously submitted papers | Whether your text was likely written by a tool such as ChatGPT |
| What you see | A similarity score, with every matched passage and its source | Sentence-level highlights of text that reads as AI-generated |
| What it can miss | Original AI-generated text, because it does not match an existing source | Human writing that copies a source without attribution |
| Use it to | Add missing citations, fix quotes and rewrite close paraphrases | Check whether your writing reads as AI-generated before you submit |
| On Skyline | Free up to 700 words, right here on this page | Free up to 700 words with our AI detector for essays |
Because each check can miss what the other finds, many instructors now use both. You can run either check on its own, or use a paid scan that covers both in one report.

Yes. The checker flags paraphrased similarities as well as word-for-word matches, so reworded passages that still follow a source closely are shown in your report.
The similarity score shows how much of your text matches other sources. A match is not automatically plagiarism, because correctly quoted and cited passages also count, so review each highlighted passage and its source.
There is no single acceptable percentage, because each university and instructor sets their own rules. What matters most is that every match is either your own original wording or a properly quoted and cited source.
You can upload documents in any file format or paste your text directly. Each check needs at least 50 words, and free checks cover up to 700 words.
