Institutions use detectors as a first screening step, and many limit how scores are used in misconduct cases.

An AI detection score is an estimate of how likely text is to be AI-written, not proof. As a general guide, scores up to about 20% rarely cause problems, 21-35% may lead to questions and above 35% often prompts a review.
Different tools report scores differently, so the same essay can score differently elsewhere. See what common scores mean and what percentage of AI is acceptable.
A score is a reason to look closer, not proof of misconduct. Keep your drafts, notes and version history so you can show how you wrote the work.

No AI detector is perfect. Here is how ours performed against seven other tools on the same set of documents, and exactly how we ran the test.
When: October 2026
Documents: 126 in total, 63 written by humans and 63 generated by AI tools
Sources: Human texts were 40 student essays shared with permission and 23 public-domain articles. AI texts were 63 essays generated with ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Claude and Gemini on the same prompts, 21 per tool, with 20 of them lightly edited by hand.
Settings: Each detector was run on its default settings, using the version available in October 2026, with the full document pasted as plain text.
How accuracy is measured: The share of the 126 documents each detector classified correctly.
Results vary by text type, length and language. A single test is a snapshot, not a guarantee, and no detector should be the only basis for a decision about a student.
| Detector | Accuracy | Correct | Incorrect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turnitin | 98 | 2 | |
| Skyline Academic | 97 | 3 | |
| Originality.ai | 90 | 10 | |

| ZeroGPT | 75 | 25 | |
| Grammarly | 64 | 36 | |
| CrossPlag | 60 | 40 | |
| IvyPanda | 56 | 44 |
